A winner dance for Roger Milla

Do you remember chubby, middle aged football player from Cameroon? Roger Milla, yes, that’s him. Entire planet remembered him on a World Championship in Italy when he stole the show from all other stars and great football players on that tournament. From that time on any decent football follower knows who is Roger Milla and where he comes from. Cameroons were the hit of World Cup of 1990 in Italy, and a dance of an old striker Roger Milla was the most striking detail in their appearance.

On a Mundial in Italy, Cameroons made a sensational accomplishment. Never before that, not one National selection from Africa ever succeeded in coming to quarter finals, and that success afterwards repeated only Ghana and Senegal. Cameroons started their unbelievable story in 1990 with a great sensation- winning the first round over, then a World Champion, Argentina. Then they won over Romanians and came through the third round totally careless playing against already written off Soviet Union who won the game scoring 4:0 but they still couldn’t escape the last place.

In eighth-finals Cameroon got historic chance to become a first selection from the “black continent” which got hold of the quarter – finals at one Mundial. The opponent, on that June 23, 1990, at the stadium of Napoli in Naples, was Colombia with stars Igita and Valderama. Ninety minutes after, the score stayed 0:0 and the extensions were necessary, and then on the scene came the “old man” Roger Milla. He came in a game as a substitute in a second half time and in three minutes picked up all the world’s glory scoring goals in 106th and 109th minute and in doing so provided a triumph, which only lessened the goal of Colombian player Redin, five minutes before the end. Milla’s dance, after he gave mate, for the first time, to the famous Igita, and especially when he after the first goal used bewildered reaction of Colombian goal keeper, whose love of playing 30-40 meters out of his net and attempts to dribble opponents backfired. He became a part of football history and Cameroon came to the quarter finals. Roger Milla and the famous generation of Cameroons were stopped in their next step: one step from the semi – finals, scoring 3:2, after the extensions, with two penalties which Gary Lineker performed, English had won.
The success of Cameroons in Italy is still remembered, as are goals and Roger Milla’s famous dance in a match with Colombia, dance with which Milla enchanted the world and in his old days became a huge football star.

In Cameroon, he is of course a National hero and he even lived to see the honor of being put on a post stamp as well as some computer games bearing his name.
At this moment he is an official at the Football Association of Cameroon.
