  • Nedavno smo slušali tvoj DJ mix tance i hardcore klasika nastalih 90tih godina. U tvojoj muzici je veliki uticaj jungle i oldschool zvuka.

Sully aka Jack Stevens definitely stands out as one of the UK’s great chameleons. He rubs shoulders with some of the Dubstep and Garage elite but is also right at home as part of Jungle’s new school. He has had releases on Keysound , Astrophonica & Black Acre to name just a few, but also he has his own label Uncertain Hour. Recently he has played in Novi Sad (Serbia) at Baseline Crew’s birthday party, and gave an interview exclusively for Dotkom.

  • Recently we have listened to your DJ mix trance and hardcore classics from the 90’s. Jungle and old school has a significant impact on your music. When did you discover rave culture and start making your own music?

Ah yeah that mix was for Sim Hutchins Club Eighteen To Thirty radio series – his recent album was themed around the energy, folly and molly of youth and my mix was a call back to my late teenage years. I listened to a lot of different music but the free party soundsystems of the south east of England (Storm/Surge/STS/Coalition/Teknikal Disturbance were our locals) loved a bit of german trance. This would have been 2002/2003. London crews mostly focused on techno and thought all that cheesy stuff was a bit of a joke but we’d go wherever we could get to that weekend, we were pretty open to everything. I started playing around with software at the same time as this – free party culture didn’t really glorify DJs and lineups in the same way as the club world so I wasn’t drawn to mixing, it was all about making tunes. Or at least trying, haha.

  • Garage and dubstep were your first music releases from ten years ago. How do you feel that period from today’s point of view?

That was a great time, there were a lot of people making music with very different approaches who were all connected by this idea of dubstep and that made the scene as a whole exciting. Sets and lineups were really vibrant and had all this individuality – as a sound grows and tropes you tend to lose that diversity but those melting pot years were really exciting.

  • Your music is labeled as Modern jungle. A lot of new artists as well as old heads have credits for jungle reincarnation. Who would you point out and who would you like to collaborate with?

Yeah here’s a lot of great music being made under that banner at the moment. And a lot at the fringes mixing other influences in which has brought some fresh energy in. To reel off a few names Kid Lib, Forest Drive West, Sonars Ghost, Mantra, Breaka, Outer Heaven, Double O, Monita, Dwarde, Tim Reaper, Gremlinz & Jesta, J Kenzo, Phineus II & Ricky Force are all in excellent form at the moment and that’s just scratching the surface.

  • Your record label Uncertain Hour has two releases. What can we expect in the future and is the next edition already finished?

Just more rhythmic trickery really! I’ve covered quite a few different styles over the years but UH is just a home for most of my breakbeat collages. There’ll likely be another installation before the end of the year but I’m working on a couple of other projects too so we will see…

  • In our opinion your performance in Novi Sad at Club Tunnel was an outstanding one. The people who were at the party confirmed that. What are your impressions and do you have any message for them?

It was a lot of fun in there! It’s a great space and we had the placed heated up nicely! I’d never expected to end up raving in Serbia so big thanks to everyone who broadened my horizons, got a sweat on and made a night to remember.
